Anti-racism, Feminism, and Scientific Knowledge (1970-1979): The Happy Period of Time for the Black People

Hello, in this blog I'm going to introduce Events, People, and Technology of the time period during the 1970-1979. During this time period, most of the events were related to the black people as they had gotten more independence of taking more actions than before. They were able to run in politics, run their own society, and do much more of which they could not do before. Some information might be new, so I will write about the information in depth. I will write about how each event, person, and technology has changed our lives till today.

People

(-Andrew Young, the first African-American who ran in for Congress, and got chosen.)

1. Andrew Young was the first African-American voted as a democrat for Congress from Georgia, in 1972. President Jimmy Carter appointed Andrew Young as the ambassador to the U.N. in the year of 1977. It was time when the white people felt that even the black people needed liberty. This event was very important, for that event represented of all equality of black people. They were allowed to run in politics and were allowed to vote. This year the black people felt happier as since they were not being segregated as were before. During this period of time, the black people felt that they were almost as equal as the white people. If this event did not occur, until now black people may not been allowed to run in politics, only white people would be ruling most of the countries till now.

2. Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman to be elected in the U.S. House of Representatives. And during the year of 1972, she ran for the President’s office in 1972. Also, this event was more important, because it promoted feminism and also had equality for all blacks. Even woman were allowed to run in politics. Again, the black people were not being discriminated but this event also gave most of the woman pride, for they were being almost as equally as men. They were able to get jobs, own properties, and were allowed to marry.

3. Jesse Jackson was the founder of PUSH (People United to Save Humanity) in 1971, and was the leader in the civil rights movement. This organization worked to strengthen the financial and economic stability of African Americans in the late 1970s. Again, this event promoted equality to all black men. And this after this event occurred; black people were also allowed to run their own organization, without the white people being much involved. And this event allowed the black people to run their own societies, and making their own social groups.

Events

1. Pathet Lao (communist leader of Laos) and the government of Laos decided to sign the Vientiane Treaty in February 21, 1973. The Vientiane Treaty said that all the foreign forces in their country should be removed. This event represents nationalism, and since they loved their country, the government and Pathet Lao, thought that other countries should not start ruling their own country. And if this event did not occur, in this modern world, would have probably still been under foreign forces. And this the foreign forces continued to rule Laos, they might think that they are powerful enough to conquer other countries as well. And so, foreign forces would start to rule other countries.

-(Earth Day- reminds us of where are living and that we only have one planet.)

2. As an environmental movement, the first “Earth Day” was celebrated, on 22 April 1970. This event was important, since
people started to realize that everybody lives on an island, and we have no other place to go, if our lovely planet is devastated. So the people took action to start doing something about our planet earth, and global warming. If this event did not take place, until now people would have been still polluting not bothering about Earth.

-(People started to realize that wars are nothing but an event of killing, so came along this 'anti-war' march.

3. In April 24 1971, a huge anti-war march took place, in the city of Washington D.C. People started to realize that in wars, since all men are ‘brothers’, they are killing their own ‘ human family’, and that innocent people were dying most including children and women. If the anti-war action was not taken up, there would have still been much more wars till today. And situations might have been worse, since more countries want to govern other countries, which would probably cause WWIII.

4. In the year of 1975, the United Nations announces that year as the International Year of the Woman. This year was very important for women, as they were well respected that year. This event promoted feminism. Thanks to this event, otherwise woman would not have been able to live the life they are leading today. They would not be able to won properties, marry, or even have a job. But, after that even occurred, people realized that even women are humans, so they were given more liberty than before.

Technologies

-(An example of SONY Floppy Disc, the earliest stage of data storage device.)

1. In 1970 the floppy disc was first announced and came into production. Without the floppies, we would not have been able to carry information around with us. And the evolution of floppies became the USB.

-(The first 'basic' computer processor was invented, for its forerunners were colossal and were not portable compared to this one.)

2. The microprocessor was launched by Intel in 1971, and was known as the "computer on a chip." This invention was very important because without computers, today life would have been very hard to live. They help us do almost anything, with the help of Internet. We are now able to work on the computers, talk to people in other countries, and download entertainment files, such as movies or music.

3. The spacecraft ‘Apollo 17’, conveyed back 250 samples of soil and rock. the last manned craft to the moon. This event was very important, for it allowed humans to discover things outside our planet. And it made man more interested in space/astronomy. It allowed astronomers to make spacecrafts that will travel to other planets nd find out what the atmosphere is in other planets.

4. And the videocassette recorder (VCR), which was also introduced, in the mid 1970’s and revolutionized home entertainment. This event changed home entertainment forever, it was then possible to sit in home and watch movies peacefully, rather than going to the movies, and doing so much of work. The DVD came after the VCR also making it for fun in home. But both of them had the same concept, to make home entertainment more fun.

5. The neutron bomb, which destroys living beings but leaves buildings intact, was developed. This wasn’t really an invention that everybody could use, just that it could be used during wars. This invention was used first during the Vietnamese War. It was used just for killing soldiers, and leaving the buildings intact, so after the war, the countries would not have to pay so much for the costs for reconstructing the buidings.

Entertainment-

-(The logo of Dolby Digital Entertainment)

1. Many awe-inspiring movies were released during the 1970’s . New technologies such as Dolby Digital Theater sound made watching movies much more entertaining. Many movies were categorized as sci-fi adventure for example and stunning unique effects of George Lucas's Star Wars. That movie made it one of the highest rated films ever. Sylvester Stallone's Rocky gave many people inspiration for doing things that were not possible before. There were also thrilling movies for example of Steven Spielberg's Jaws1975, and the chilling Exorcist. The high technology made movies much more interesting and pleasurable to watch.

Scientific Discoveries-

-(Louise Brown is celebrating her 25th birthday)

1. Louise Brown was the first test tube baby, who was born on 25 July, 1978, developed from an artificially inseminated egg implanted in the mother's womb. They found out by combining genes, people could actually create lives, who would exactly behave like human. This event allowed parents to still have babies, even though they have some problems in their reproductive system. Also, scientists can create artificial lives and make them live. It was discovered that artificial lives could be made, by combining genes to make an offspring of two parents.

Sports-

-(Anthony Joseph Foyt was, and still is considered the best automobile racecar driver.)

1. 1972 – A.J. Foyt made racing history by winning the Indianapolis 500, 24 hours of Le Mans, and the Daytona 500. He created the world record, and even till now, no one has been able to beat his record. This is very important, for his record now challenges, other race drivers to beat his record. And to beat it, many engineers are advancing more in technology, to win the series of all the races and beat A.J. Foyt’s record.
